Wool, Women, and Books: the Leyden Years –  The November 20 talk will highlight the importance of wool and the cloth industry, the strong and vital role of women within this group, and the revolutionary effect of the printing press on all layers of 17th-century society.  In particular, through the maps and visuals found in the new 400th anniversary printing of Before the Mayflower: A Novel, J.L.Rose will illustrate how these aspects directly connect and impact the people we follow before the crossing in 1620. Many in the group worked in the resurging cloth trade, some enrolled in the world-renowned University, and men like Brewster, Reynoldes, and Brewer were involved in Leyden’s prolific publishing efforts. And to be certain, the supporting women were by no means meek or silent bystanders.
